If you think it’s so easy

It was a warm, muggy day. In an effort to cool off, Jane had taken a walk to a forest near her house so she could read her import comic in preferred silence. Quaint and tranquil, the forest was the perfect place for Jane to get away from the hustle of modern day society.

When she found the perfect spot, she sat back and opened the comic. The comic was of her favorite genre, Sonic the Hedgehog. She was unlike most girls; she loved the games and the characters and couldn’t get enough of the fiction.

In the comic she was reading, her favorite character, Amy Rose was supposed to have a staring role. She had always rooted for the character and hoped that this comic was the time where Amy would finally ‘get’ Sonic.

As she read though the comic, she became increasingly annoyed. Again, Amy’s attempts were in vain. By the end of the comic, she hadn't 'gotten' Sonic. Jane nearly threw a fit as her cynical nature began to manifest itself.

“How can she fail again? What the hell is her problem? How can she be so inept? Why if I were her, I would have had Sonic ages ago!” she angrily said.

Getting up, she was prepared to head home when she suddenly felt a chill. A tremendous gust of wind appeared out of seemingly nowhere, blowing leaves off of the trees and sending her comic flying. Unable to withstand the gust, she was knocked to the ground, getting a face full of dirt in the process. As the wind abated, she could have sworn that she heard a voice whispering.

“You think it’s so easy, lets see how good you do!” the voice softly said in an almost giggly tone.

Quickly picking herself up, Jane looked all over around her for the source of the voice. As she sought out the source of the voice, she was completely oblivious to her human ears having been absorbed into her skull. Ignoring the tingling near the top of her head, she had no idea a pair of pink triangular ears had sprouted. Whoever had spoken, she was forced to concede was gone. She was in a foul mood, not only from Amy not getting Sonic, but also from the loss of her comic. Suddenly however, her mood slightly improved. She wasn’t sure why, but she simply felt a little better.

Deciding to look for the comic, she walked in the direction the wind had sent it. This would take her deeper into the forest, but she was determined to find it. It was of special importance and she couldn’t afford to lose it.

As she walked, a strange wave of euphoria went through her. Unbeknownst to her, her eyelashes grew much longer and her eyes nearly tripled in size, turning a deep green color. Jane absent-mindedly took off and pocketed her glasses' not thinking twice about how she could see perfectly without them. As the giddiness faded, her mood had again risen. She was barley mad at all anymore.

Continuing to look for the comic, she walked deeper and deeper into the forest. She had no idea how the wind could have tossed it this far.

After five more minutes of searching, she came to a river where she found the comic laying open face up under the water. Kneeling down, she submersed her hands into the water. The water was very cold and made her fingers tingle. As if on queue, she again experienced a surge of ebullience. For several seconds, she felt extraordinary and wanted to sing in joy. As the feeling seeped through her body, three long, thick strands of pink fur grew from her forehead, each on top of the other before facing slightly forward. Her blonde hair changed into several large pink quills around her head. As if combed down by an unseen force, the quills went down around her head to take on the appearance of hair. The changes continued as her mouth and nose grew out into a cute little muzzle with her nose becoming a little black nose at the tip of it. As the alterations concluded, tan fur grew on her muzzle and pink fur grew around the rest of her head. As the euphoria faded, her head looked very much like that of Amy Rose, in fact it looked identical. Still, she was completely unaware of it.

Now, almost in a good mood, she lifted the comic out of the water and stood up. The comic was dripping wet and the text in it had smeared, it was clear that it was ruined. Oddly enough, she didn’t seem to mind. She knew that this should have enraged her enough to throw her into a fit of cursing but it was almost as if she were no longer capable of anger.

Shrugging her shoulders, she turned around and started walking towards the way out of the forest. She didn’t get more then a few meters away from the river before the euphoria returned. This time, she couldn’t control herself and started laughing almost uncontrollably. As she laughed, her blue tee shirt and jeans started to glow. Despite the sheer impossibility of it, she was completely oblivious as her clothes began to brightly glow until they became a field of energy. The energy reformed her clothes from a shirt and jeans into a red strapless dress. Oddly, she had no idea of her change in apparel. As she continued laughing, the skin on her arms changed from olive to light tan. As pink fur engulfed her torso and legs, she felt warm but dismissed it as normal. Finally, she lost a fair bit of height, quickly shrinking from a 5’6 to 4’8. Even as her arms and torso size adjusted to this change of height, she was still unaware of the process. As the euphoria faded, her good mood was now a very good mood. Feeling an almost sense of elation, she started skipping through the forest. Where before she had wanted to analyze the comic and nit-pick where Amy had gone wrong in her pursuit of Sonic, she suddenly saw such behavior as silly and wondered how she could be so mean. After all, she had tried her hardest and had only followed her feelings.

After some twenty minutes of skipping, she had reached the exit from the forest. There was a garbage can there and just as she threw the comic towards it, it stopped in mid flight and began hovering in mid air. Normally such an occurrence would have fascinated and even terrified her but this time, she found herself laughing.

“Cool, it’s hovering!” she gleefully said. She was completely unaware of how different her voice sounded. The comic suddenly turned into a very bright ball of brilliant blue and white energy with swirls of pink flowing through it. In an instant, it flew towards her, completely engulfing her body. She would have panicked if weren’t for the fact that she was experiencing the most intense emotional joyance of her life. Joy like nothing she had ever experienced overwhelmed her as the energy made the final changes to her body.

Pink fur surrounded her feet as they were changed into a three-toed form and covered by large red boots. Large white gloves with orange wrist rings surrounded her fingers and hands, completely engulfing them. A red hair band appeared behind her ears as a petite pink tail emerged from her tailbone, pushing her dress upwards slightly. Suddenly shrinking, she shrunk down to a mere 3’9 as her dress was resized to fit her new stature. As the energy abated, her changes were complete.

She felt different emotionally. Despite the strangeness of what had happened to her, she couldn’t help but feel joyful. It was then that she noticed what had happened to her. Looking down at her new body, she tugged at her dress. She knew that she should have felt everything from fascination to anger to fear over what had happened. Oddly, she felt happy. The sheer impossibility of this should have overwhelmed her, perhaps driven her mad but somehow, questions of reality seemed irrelevant or perhaps beyond her comprehension.

Her first reaction was to examine her new body. She wanted to take her gloves off, but something in the back of her head told her not to. Feeling around her face, arms and legs she giggled at how strange her body felt. She almost ran her hand through her hair when she remembered her 'hair' was really sharp quills. Again, something in the back of her head told her that this was her normal body and that there was nothing strange about it! Reaching around to her back, she found her little tail and tugged at it, again giggling in spite of the slight hint of pain the action gave her. She couldn’t help but laugh out loud at the irony of her situation, especially after what she had said about Amy.

Finally looking around, she knew that her first reaction should have been to panic and run for help. Something in her continued to re-assure her that this was normal. She started walking away from the forest when she found herself surrounded by a brilliant plume of alternating red, green and blue light. The sheer psychedelic nature of it made her feel dizzy for several seconds, as the world seemed to fade away.

A few seconds later, things seemed to fade back into existence, as the world again became coherent. The plume around her faded and she soon realized that she was in a different world.

All around, the world seemed more like a cartoon then real life and she wondered for a second if she was dreaming. As she walked for a bit, she quickly realized that this was all too real. The sites, the smells, the sounds were far too coherent for a dream. She heard a strange sound above; it sounded like a helicopter. She looked up to see a small multi-tailed fox like creature flying towards her. She waved as he got close. A few seconds later, the fox landed and walked up to her.

He immediately ran up to and gave her a huge hug.

“So you’re finally here! Welcome, my name is..” the little fox-like creature attempted to inquire but was cut off.

“Your Tails! Wow it’s so cool to actually meet you,” she yelled, violently shaking the fox’s right paw. Shaking free of her grip, the fox rubbed his hand for a few seconds before regaining his composure.

“I know I may look like Tails but I’m not, my name is Kyle. I came here like you did. So what is your name?” Kyle asked.

“My name is…” The female hedgehog started, suddenly having trouble remember who she was. The force in her mind that had been reassuring her grew infinitely more powerful. A new identity, her identity unfolded and in a flash, she knew who she truly was.

“My name is Amy; Amy Rose” she responded. The little fox seemed a bit puzzled.

“But who were you before this happened to you?” he asked. Amy was confused; she had no idea what her real name was. She didn’t mind at all though, in fact it was as if she wasn’t even capable of minding.

“Who cares Silly?” she beamed, before asking the question that she had wanted to ask since she saw the fox. “So where’s that hunk Sonic and that cutie Tails?” she inquired.

“Er, he’s in that building. However, I don’t think he wants to be…” Kyle responded, only to see that Amy had already begun making her way towards the structure.

Skipping along the way, Amy started humming a song that she knew as her theme.

“I got out my map and chose a place I wanted to go to.”
